St Brigid’s Church, Oldcastle

About This Church
St Brigid’s Church was built at the turn of the 20th century, replacing an earlier chapel from 1815 as the needs of the growing Catholic population increased. The project was encouraged by Bishop Nulty, a native of Oldcastle, and construction began in 1899 under the leadership of Fr. Laurence Grehan, who organised fundraising for the new church. Designed by the notable Irish architect W.H. Byrne, the church was constructed in a striking Neo-Gothic style, reflecting the renewed confidence and prominence of the Catholic Church in Ireland at that time. It was completed in the early 1900s, with its impressive bell tower and spire added around 1930, giving the building its distinctive landmark presence in the town.
